Advisory Committee
President – Leonie Young
Leonie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 when she was 32 years old. Since her diagnosis she has been involved with many aspects of breast cancer advocacy and support with both national and international breast cancer organisations. Her involvement now also includes organisations concerned with other cancers.
In particular, she is Chair of Cancer Voices Queensland and a member of the Advisory Board of Cancer Voices Australia. She is also a member of the consumer advisory groups of the Australian New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group (current Chair), Cancer Australia, and the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Since her diagnosis she has been a breast cancer support service volunteer with the Cancer Council Queensland.
Leonie is the Peer Support Coordinator for the Wesley Hospital Kim Walters Choices Program in Brisbane, which offers support and information to women, men and their families who are affected by breast and gynaecological cancers.
Secretary – Aurilea Augustine
Aurilea was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1991. It was a turning point in her life and she values the opportunities that have opened up for her since her diagnosis. Through her volunteering with the Cancer Council Queensland Aurilea works with the Breast Cancer Support Service, the Relay For Life, and the Cancer Council Branch. She assists with the Women’s Cancer Support Group and enjoys paddling with the Dragon Boat Club members. Aurilea is part of the South Rockhampton Uniting Church family and Secretary of the Blue Care Committee.
She enjoys volunteering with Cancer Voices Queensland and believes it serves an important role to assist those touched by cancer.
Treasurer – Lance Brooks
Lance Brooks' involvement with Cancer Voices Queensland came about after his own battle with Ewings Sarcoma (pPNET) during his early twenties. Looking for an opportunity to work not only with those impacted by cancer directly, but with the wider health community in general, Lance identified Cancer Voices Queensland as providing the perfect opportunity to do just that!
Always eager to put his hand up for any job, Lance has been able to build upon his experience as a regulatory economist, joining various committees and research papers working as a consumer representative. Lance holds a Master in Business (Applied Finance) and Bachelor degrees in both Economics and Commerce.
Dan Kent
Dan was diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer in 2005. He is retired and lives in Bundaberg. Dan was an executive with Bundaberg Sugar Ltd.
Besides enjoying his role on the Cancer Voices Queensland Advisory Committee, he also has an active role in health maters through his involvement with and membership of the Bundaberg Health Community Council, Wide Bay Ostomates Association Inc, the Consumer Advisory Panel of the Australian Gastro-Intestinal Trials Group and the Bundaberg Cancer Support Group for Men.
Wanda Lawson
A founding member of Cancer Voices Queensland, Wanda Lawson is an advocate from way back, with her original involvement in the women’s rights movement in the early 1980’s. When diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2004, she decided to dust off old skills and reengage as an advocate. A keen artist and exerciser (Ice climbing in Alaska 6 months after finishing Chemotherapy), she was recently involved in expanding the breast cancer exercise program, offered through the Kim Walters Choices program to include women with gynaecological cancers.
Her Cancer Voices Queensland input to date has been to a provide consumer feedback to EdCan in the development of a Specialist Cancer Nurse Curriculum and to provide a response the CHF eHealth Survey.
In her spare time Wanda works as a business consultant and currently runs a small IT company.
Danielle Tindle
Danielle is employed by Queensland Health as the Senior Project Officer for Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Services based at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Brisbane. She is involved with the development and implementation of a statewide model of specialised care for AYA with cancer.
Danielle's career focus in AYA cancer care evolved from her own experience of lymphoma in her early twenties. As a passionate advocate for delivering quality, individualised care for patients and their families, she is involved in a variety of committees and forums. Her particular interests include survivorship, cancer and sexuality, identity formation, and the role of the “expert patient” in the health care system.
In 2011, Danielle commenced PhD research looking at the experiences of AYA cancer survivors. She is undertaking this research study at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Danielle also holds postgraduate qualifications in Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Care (UK), a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters of International Relations.
Hec Garrick
Hector Garrick has degrees in Architecture and Quantity Surveying and a Masters Degree in Economics – Town and Regional. Whilst living in Townsville in the 1980s he was Chairman of the Liberal Party and a candidate in State elections. From 1992 until his retirement in the early 2000s he was Director of the Buildings and Grounds Division at the Central Queensland University. He has been a member of Rotary for over 28 years, is a Paul Harris Fellow and was District Governor for the Central Queensland Division District 9570 in 2003-2004.
The death of his eldest son due to melanoma over four years ago and his own fight with prostate cancer, encouraged him to join the Cancer Council where he has been an active member for over six years and more recently, to join Cancer Voices Queensland.
He is actively involved in several community organizations, does part time consultancy and in his spare time enjoys carpentry, gardening, restoring furniture, and making radio controlled planes and boats. Together with his wife Rosemary, who is a keen Genealogist, they take every opportunity to tour Australia in their caravan with their toy poodle Gina.
Gary Power
Gary was diagnosed with and treated for metastatic skin cancer in 2006 -2007, undergoing chemo and radiation therapy to the head and neck. His treatment and recovery were characterised by wonderful support from those in the cancer care environment, as well as his family and friends. He is motivated in his Cancer Voices, Cancer Connect, "c-vivor" and Head and Neck Support Group activities by the desire to influence the development of measures leading to positive outcomes for cancer sufferers and their teams.
Gary is a solicitor of some 25 years mostly with the Australian Government. He believes his understanding of the workings of government can contribute to the important advocacy work undertaken by CVQ and its affiliates. Gary is married to the most wonderful one-time carer and they have three teenage sons of whom they are very proud, but with whom they are unable to keep up! He is a keen cyclist; alas, with whom no-one seems to have difficulty keeping up.
Trina Hockey
Trina’s husband recently lost his battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Having cared for him during his illness, Trina saw the need for a voice for those taking the same journey. Trina is also a member of Cancer Australia’s Consumer Network and a member of Consumer Health Australia.
Outside of the health arena, Trina runs her own successful business and Chairs both Gold Coast Institute of TAFE and ON-Q Human Resources. She is also an Indigenous Community Volunteer, assisting in business and board mentoring.
